SECONDARY I & II

Geography

  • Examine information and maintain a critical distance with respect to media resources
  • Distinguish fact from opinion
  • Use information from a variety of sources, evaluate these sources and judge their validity and relevance
  • Uses information and communications technologies appropriately 

History and Citizenship Education

Competency 2: Interprets social phenomena using the historical method

  • Establishes the factual basis of social phenomena
  • Finds information on various aspects of the facts 
  • Selects relevant documents 
  • Bases his/her argument on a critical analysis of the sources 
  • Argues on the basis of facts rather than opinions
  • Takes into account the need to critique the frame of reference of authors cited as sources

Element of Knowledge – First experience of democracy

  • 3. Relationships between individuals and democratic society today
    • a. Lists rights and responsibilities of citizens (e.g. voting, jury duty, participation in public debates)
    • d. Indicates factors that promote informed participation in public debate (e.g. access to information)

 

SECONDARY III & IV

History of Quebec and Canada

Competency 2 : Interprets a social phenomenon

  • Identifies elements of context 
  • Distinguishes intentions, values and beliefs 

Critical Analysis of Sources  (Appendix 1)

The following questions can be used to analyse sources:

  • Is it an original document, a reproduction, a copy or an excerpt? 
  • In what general historical context was the document produced? 
  • For what purpose was the document produced? 
  • Was its production commissioned? 
  • Who was the author of the document? 

 

SECONDARY V

Contemporary World

  • Systematically and critically process information from various sources
  • Exercise critical judgment regarding the credibility of their information sources and to reflect on the influence the sources may have on their opinions. 
  • Consult a variety of sources in order to confirm or rule out information gathered from the mass media.

Competency 1: Interprets a contemporary world problem

  • Analyzes the problem – Identifies different points of view, examines some of the interests at stake

Competency 2: Takes a position on a contemporary world issue

  • Examines some points of view on the issue – Identifies various points of view, Identifies the values and interests that underlie these points of view
  • Consider the media treatment of the issue – Recognizes the choices made by some media in their treatment of the issue, establishes the influence of the media on his/her opinion.

Cultural Geography

  • Uses critical judgment, in particular when assessing the validity of the information gathered
  • Considers the facts, assess their accuracy, put them in perspective and shift their focus from their own point of view
  • Technological and communications tools help students locate and process information; students are required to use these tools in the work they produce. 

History of the 20th Century

  • Use critical judgment regarding the sources, evaluate their credibility and distinguish between fact and opinion.

Competency 1:  Characterizes a historical turning point

  • Defines a historical turning point – find facts
  • Examines sources – Identifies points of view, recognizes shared and distinct aspects of the points of view of historians, authors and media sources, considers the context in which the sources were produced

Competency 2:  Interprets a social phenomenon using the historical method

  • Analyzes a social phenomenon –  Indicates some of the interests of the players involved 
  • Determines what the study of a social phenomenon has contributed to the exercise of his/her citizenship
