Québec Cross-Curricular Competencies and Broad Areas of Learning

The CTRL-F: Verification Skills learning outcomes link explicitly to Québec’s Cross-Curricular Competencies 1, 2 and 6 and Broad Areas of Learning Media Literacy. The follow lists the relevant competencies and areas by grade level.

SECONDARY CYCLE 1 (Sec I and II)

Cross-Curricular Competencies

Competency 1 – To use information:

  • Gathers information – Selects appropriate information sources. Compares information from different sources. Evaluates the validity of information according to criteria.
  • Systematizes the information-gathering process – Establishes research strategies. Determines the pertinence of information. Identifies the value of each piece of information

Competency 3 – To exercise critical judgement:

  • Forms an opinion – Goes back to the facts, verify their accuracy and contextualize them. Look at various options and consider existing or possible points of view. 
  • Qualifies his/her judgment – Evaluates the respective influence of reason and emotion on his/her approach. Recognizes biases.

Competency 6 To use information and learning technologies (ICT)

  • Uses appropriate technologies – Carries out various tasks using technological resources. Evaluates the potential of the available technologies and networks.  Chooses the most suitable tools for the situation.
  • Takes full advantage of these technologies – Diversifies his/her use of ICT. Takes advantage of ICT resources and functions in various types of learning. Recognizes and uses in a new context concepts and processes they have learned previously.
  • Evaluates his/her use of this technology – Recognizes his/her successes and difficulties. Seeks ways to improve use of these technologies and suggests ways to do this. Examines the relevance of using ICT by taking into account their contribution to specific tasks.

Broad Areas of Learning

Media Literacy: Enabling students to exercise critical, ethical and aesthetic judgment with respect to the media

  • Awareness of the place and influence of the media in his/her daily life and in society – media functions; media consumption habits and guidelines; influence of media messages on his/her world-view and everyday environment.
  • Understanding of the way the media portray reality – comparison between facts and opinions; recognition of the positive and negative impact of media messages.

 

SECONDARY CYCLE 2 (Sec III, IV, V)

Cross-Curricular Competencies

Competency 1To use information:

  • Gathers information – Selects appropriate information sources. Identifies the value of each piece of information. Evaluates the validity of information according to criteria. Distinguishes between essential and secondary information
  • Systematizes the information-gathering process – Establishes research strategies. Determines the pertinence of information. Uses many sources of information and cross-checks the information obtained.

Competency 3 To exercise critical judgement:

  • Forms an opinion – Goes back to the facts, verify their accuracy and contextualize them. Look at various options and consider existing or possible points of view. 
  • Qualifies his/her judgment – Evaluates the respective influence of reason and emotion on his/her approach. Recognizes his/her biases.

Competency 6 – To use information and learning technologies (ICT)

  • Masters the technologies – Becomes familiar with various technological tools. Diversifies his/her use of the tools. Chooses the most suitable tools for the situation
  • Uses the technologies in his/her learning
  • Evaluates his/her use of this technology

Broad Areas of Learning

Media Literacy: Enabling students to exercise critical, ethical and aesthetic judgment with respect to the media

  • Awareness of the place and influence of the media in his/her daily life and in society – reflection on the functions of the media, search for media consumption guidelines, awareness of the influence of media messages on his/her world-view and everyday environment
  • Understanding of the way the media portray reality – comparison between facts and opinions, recognition of the positive and negative impact of media messages, critical comparison of different representations of reality or events
