Nunavut Social Studies

The CTRL-F: Verification Skills learning outcomes link explicitly to Nunavut’s Social Studies program, which is organized according to the Nunavusiutit strand. The relevant curricular outcomes are listed by grade level and subject below.

GRADE 7

Strand 7 (Grade 7)

  • acquire information to find answers through listening, observing, reading and utilizing community resources
  • seek and work with information from more than one source
  • compare information about one topic from two or more sources to see if they are identical, similar, parallel, or inconsistent, unrelated or contradictory 
  • distinguish between well founded and ill founded opinions

 

GRADE 8

Strand 8 (Grade 8)

  • identify possible sources and locations of information 
  • identify values underlying various positions taken on an issue
  • distinguish between well founded and ill founded opinions
  • identify fact, opinion, bias, and propaganda 
  • identify the purpose, message, and intended audience of visual communications

 

GRADE 9

Strand 9 (Grade 9)

  • compare sources of information for accuracy, relevancy, reliability, and validity
  • identify and evaluate alternative answers, conclusions, solutions, or decisions

 

GRADE 10

Social Studies 10 

Skills and Processes 

S.1 – develop skills of critical thinking and creative thinking:

  • evaluate ideas and information from multiple sources
  • assess the validity of information based on context, bias, sources, objectivity, evidence or reliability 

S. 2/3 – develop skills of historical thinking/geographic thinking:

  • use current, reliable information sources from around the world 

S.7 – apply the research process:

  • demonstrate proficiency in the use of research tools and strategies to investigate issues
  • plan and perform complex searches, using digital sources
  • select relevant information when conducting research 

S.9– develop skills of media literacy:

  • assess the authority, reliability and validity of electronically accessed information 
  • appraise information from multiple sources, evaluating each source in terms of the author’s perspective or bias and use of evidence
  • analyze the impact of various forms of media, identifying complexities and discrepancies in the information and making distinctions between sound generalizations and misleading oversimplification
  • demonstrate discriminatory selection of electronically accessed information that is relevant to a particular topic

  • 4.3– accept political, social and environmental responsibilities associated with global citizenship (C, GC, ER)
