  • Discuss the rights and responsibilities of being a global citizen
  • Support a position on local, national, or international issues after considering various perspectives

Social Studies 8

Strand: Civics

  • Assess perspectives on a contemporary local, national, or international issue
  • Support an informed position on this issue and undertake a course of action

  • Plan and carry out age-appropriate actions that demonstrate engaged citizenship

 

GRADE 10

Civics

  • Explore digital citizenship to respond to issues of civic importance.
    • Use media literacy strategies to identify reliable and unreliable sources, check claims, and trace information back to the source
    • Critically analyze data visualizations
    • Demonstrate how citizens can use data to make informed decisions

 

GRADE 12

Political Science 120

  • SCO 3.1 – Students will examine the rights, responsibilities, roles, and status of individuals and groups in Canada.
  • SCO 3.2 –  Students will investigate methods used by media, governments, and political groups to influence public opinion.
    • Concepts and content: media literacy; bias; fact/value distinction; communication technologies 
    • Key Global Competency: creates a positive digital footprint 
  • SCO 3.3 – Students will model responsible citizenship
    • Concepts and Content: Students take informed, ethical and empowering action

World Issues 120

  • SCO 2.1 – analyze issues resulting from interactions among individuals, groups, and societies
    • Concepts and content: Media, Mass Media, Fake News
    • Achievement indicators: Students will be able to determine a credible media source and determine bias in media coverage.
  • SCO 2.3 –  demonstrate personal and social responsibility for a peaceful and sustainable world.
    • Concepts and content: citizenship
