Background

Roblox is a popular online game that allows users to program and play games created by themselves and other users. 

Ikea is a Swedish multinational company known for its ready-to-assemble furniture. 



About the Example

 This TikTok video explains that Ikea is hiring people to work in their virtual store on the popular online game Roblox. Does this mean you can get paid to sell pixelated Swedish meatballs?!

Let’s use a keyword search (“ikea roblox store”) to check this claim. Our search brings up articles on this story from various well-known professional news and media organizations including Wired, CBS News, Business Insider and Time Magazine.

Clicking into the coverage from Time Magazine we learn that Ikea is indeed hiring 10 workers for its virtual Roblox store called “The Co-Worker Game.”

Unfortunately for any Canadian students interested in adding this job to their resume, applicants must be 18 and live in the UK or Ireland.



Activities

  2. Have students use a keyword search to check the claim.
  3. Ask students to click into the coverage from Time Magazine or another professional news organization. Guiding questions:
    • Is this claim mostly true, mostly false or something else? Explain your reasoning.
